Receiving Visitors in the Netherlands: What is a Bewijs van Garantstelling?
Expecting Visitors from Outside the EU?
If you’re planning to host family or friends from outside the European Union or Schengen Area, they may need a visa to visit the Netherlands. In such cases, you might be asked to provide a ‘bewijs van garantstelling en/of logiesverstrekking’—a formal Dutch document declaring you will act as their financial sponsor and/or provide accommodation during their stay.
What Is a Bewijs van Garantstelling?
This document, often referred to as a ‘guarantee and accommodation declaration’, is a notarized form that confirms you’ll cover the costs of your visitor’s stay if necessary. It is commonly requested as part of a visa application for short visits (less than 90 days).
Who Needs This?
Your visitor will usually need this form if they:
- Require a Schengen visa to enter the Netherlands
- Do not have sufficient funds to prove independent financial means
- Are staying with you instead of at a hotel
How to Get the Document
You must schedule an appointment with your local gemeente (municipality). There, you will:
- Bring a completed form (usually available on the gemeente website or direct from IND)
- Present valid identification (a Dutch passport or residence permit)
- Provide recent payslips and proof of income
- Sign the form in the presence of a municipal official
The signed document is then stamped and made official—ready to be sent to your guest to include in their visa application.
How Much Does It Cost?
The processing fee typically ranges from €10 to €15. Some municipalities may charge more, so check in advance.
Additional Tips
- The guest still needs to apply for their visa at the Dutch consulate in their country.
- You’re not just vouching for accommodation—you're financially responsible in case of overstays or issues.
- The document is valid for 3 months and should match the dates of the intended visit.
When Is It Not Needed?
If your guest is from a visa-exempt country, this document is generally not required. However, it can still help when proving purpose of visit and accommodation during immigration checks.
