Understanding the OV-Chipkaart: Public Transport in the Netherlands

What is the OV-Chipkaart?

The OV-Chipkaart is the primary payment method for public transport in the Netherlands. It works for trains, trams, buses, and metro services, allowing seamless travel across different transport providers.

Types of OV-Chipkaart

  • Anonymous OV-Chipkaart: Ideal for occasional travelers, available at ticket machines and service desks.
  • Personal OV-Chipkaart: Linked to your personal details, enabling automatic balance top-ups and subscription options.

Using Your OV-Chipkaart

To travel, simply check in at the start of your journey and check out at the end. Failure to check out can result in extra charges.

New: Bank Card Payments

As of 2023, contactless payments using bank cards, credit cards, and mobile wallets are now accepted on public transport. This option is useful for tourists and occasional travelers who do not wish to purchase an OV-Chipkaart.

Where to Buy & Top Up?

OV-Chipkaarten are available at train stations, supermarkets, and kiosks. You can top up your balance at ticket machines, online, or via the NS app.
